Slemani — Gulf Keystone Petroleum has temporarily suspended oil production at the Shaikan field in Duhok governorate as a precautionary measure amid escalating regional security tensions, the company announced.
In a statement, the independent oil producer said the suspension was taken solely to ensure the safety of its personnel and operations in response to the deteriorating security environment.
The company said its production facilities and financial assets have not sustained any damage, stressing that the decision was precautionary rather than the result of any direct impact on its infrastructure.
The move follows similar measures by several international energy companies operating in the Kurdistan Region, which have scaled back or temporarily halted operations in recent weeks amid heightened security risks.
Before the suspension, the Shaikan field was producing more than 45,000 barrels of oil per day, making it one of the Kurdistan Region’s largest producing oil fields.
Gulf Keystone said it is closely monitoring developments through its teams on the ground and will provide further updates to investors and the public as the security situation evolves.
The suspension comes amid a sharp deterioration in regional security following a series of missile and drone attacks targeting the Kurdistan Region. The escalating tensions have raised concerns over the safety of critical energy infrastructure and prompted several international oil operators to reassess their activities. The Kurdistan Region’s oil sector has already experienced production and export disruptions in recent weeks as security concerns continue to weigh on operations.
