ERBIL — Senior Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) official Fazil Mirani said on Wednesday that the political initiative launched by KDP leader Masoud Barzani represents the final effort to resolve the Kurdistan Region’s ongoing political disputes, urging all political parties to respond positively in the interest of Kurdish unity.
Speaking on June 10, Mirani, head of the KDP Political Bureau’s Administrative Body, described Barzani’s initiative as the latest and most significant attempt to address the Region’s political challenges and break the current deadlock.
“We hope all parties will respond positively to this initiative in a way that unites the Kurdish house,” Mirani said.
He stressed that political forces should prioritize the interests of the Kurdistan Region and its citizens over narrow partisan considerations, arguing that many of the Region’s current problems could be resolved if political actors focused on the broader public interest.
“At this stage, all political issues must be resolved, and the higher interests of the country and its citizens must be placed above narrow partisan interests,” Mirani said. “If this principle is followed, the majority of the Kurdistan Region’s current problems will be easily resolved.”
Meanwhile, an informed source told local media that Bafel Talabani had rejected a request for a meeting with Barzani, a development that could complicate efforts to ease tensions between the Kurdistan Region’s two main political parties.
The reported refusal comes amid continuing political disagreements between the KDP and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan over a range of issues, including government formation, power-sharing arrangements, and broader governance challenges facing the Kurdistan Region.
Barzani’s initiative has been presented as an effort to foster dialogue among Kurdish political parties and address longstanding disputes that have contributed to political instability in the Region. Neither Talabani nor the PUK had publicly commented on the reported meeting request as of Wednesday.
