SLEMANI — Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) has approved a request by the Gorran Movement to hold an extraordinary party congress on September 5 at its headquarters in the Kurdsat neighborhood of Slemani, according to an official letter issued by the Commission’s Department of Political Parties and Entities Affairs.
The Commission said it had no objection to the participation of Dana Ahmed Majid in the congress and approved his potential addition to the party’s General Assembly membership, subject to a vote by assembly members during the extraordinary congress.
The IHEC has also assigned a committee to supervise the congress and ensure that the proceedings comply with the relevant legal and electoral requirements.
The upcoming congress is expected to address the leadership dispute that emerged following Gorran’s previous congress in Kirkuk in February.
At that congress, Dana Ahmed Majid was appointed as the movement’s General Coordinator despite not being a member of the congress at the time. A dissatisfied faction subsequently appealed the results and challenged the legitimacy of the appointment.
In April, the Electoral Commission annulled its previous decision approving the appointment of the General Coordinator, prompting Gorran to seek another congress to resolve the leadership issue through a legally recognized process.
The September 5 extraordinary congress is therefore expected to provide Gorran with an opportunity to formally address the dispute and elect its General Coordinator in accordance with the party’s internal procedures and applicable legal requirements.
