Slemani — The Kurdistan Region, particularly Slemani province, has strengthened its position as Iraq’s leading industrial center, accounting for nearly one-third of the country’s total industrial capacity, according to official data and local authorities.
Backed by an expanding industrial infrastructure, Slemani has witnessed sustained growth across multiple sectors, hosting a wide range of manufacturing facilities, including highly specialized production plants that are unique within Iraq. Among them are advanced automotive battery manufacturing facilities, highlighting the province’s increasing role in industrial diversification.Official statistics indicate that Slemani is home to approximately 5,000 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), in addition to 150 heavy industrial factories. These facilities operate across sectors including food processing, construction materials, and manufacturing, contributing significantly to regional food security while supplying essential industrial products to markets throughout the Kurdistan Region and other parts of Iraq.Data from the Iraqi Ministry of Planning shows that around 30% of Iraq’s overall industrial sector is concentrated within the Kurdistan Region. Industrial development officials say Slemani accounts for the largest share of this activity, citing the province’s dense concentration of operational factories as well as the availability of natural raw materials and water resources that support industrial production.The province has also continued to attract substantial investment. Amanj Jalal, Director of Investment in Slemani, said the province secured 50 new development projects over the past year, drawing capital investments exceeding $1.807 billion.According to Jalal, the influx of investment enabled Slemani to attract approximately half of the total investment capital deployed across the Kurdistan Region during the period, further reinforcing its role as one of the region’s principal economic and industrial centers.Officials and industry stakeholders view the province’s growing industrial base as a key driver of economic development, employment generation, and long-term economic diversification in both the Kurdistan Region and Iraq as a whole.
