Slemani – Kurdistan Region Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani on Wednesday congratulated Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani after he was awarded one of Italy’s highest state honors, describing him as “a leader with an international vision” committed to dialogue and mutual understanding.
In a congratulatory message issued on Wednesday, Talabani said Barzani’s leadership has consistently been guided by dialogue as the preferred means of resolving disputes and promoting understanding across political issues.
“Everyone who has known him closely can testify that he believes in dialogue and understanding as the way to solve problems, and he always works to strengthen this approach in various issues,” Talabani said.
He added that such a political approach is urgently needed in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and the wider region amid growing conflicts and mounting challenges.
The congratulatory message came after Italy awarded Barzani the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Star of Italy, the country’s highest rank within the Order of the Star of Italy, during a ceremony held in Erbil on Wednesday evening.
The decoration was presented by Niccolò Fontana on behalf of Italian President Sergio Mattarella.
The ceremony opened with performances of the Iraqi patriotic song “Mawtini,” the Kurdish anthem “Ey Reqib,” and the Italian national anthem. Tommaso Sansone said the award recognized Barzani’s role in strengthening ties between the Kurdistan Region and Italy.
In his acceptance remarks, Barzani described the honor as a celebration of the long-standing historical relationship between Italy, Iraq, and the Kurdistan Region. He said the recognition also acknowledged the efforts of all those who have worked over the years to deepen bilateral relations.
Talabani concluded his message by extending his “warmest congratulations” to Barzani on receiving the Italian distinction, wishing him continued success in his leadership.
