Slemani — Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) President Bafel Jalal Talabani received Lieutenant General Omar Salih in Dabashan on Monday, where the two discussed the development of the Peshmerga forces and ongoing efforts to modernize the Kurdistan Region’s military institutions.
During the meeting, Talabani congratulated Lieutenant General Omar Salih on his recent promotion, expressing appreciation for his contributions to the reorganization of the Peshmerga forces and wishing him continued success in his duties.
Talabani also praised the role of the Peshmerga in safeguarding the Kurdistan Region, describing the force as a cornerstone of the region’s security and stability.
The PUK leader stressed the importance of continuing reforms within the Peshmerga and advancing efforts to build a more professional military force. He emphasized that the reorganization process should be guided by modern military principles and internationally recognized standards.
“The Peshmerga forces must be reorganized in accordance with modern military science and international disciplines,” Talabani said, underscoring the need to strengthen the force’s effectiveness and institutional capacity.
The meeting reflects ongoing efforts by Kurdish leaders to support military reform initiatives aimed at improving training, command structures, and operational readiness within the Peshmerga forces.
Officials said the discussions focused on enhancing the capabilities of the Peshmerga and ensuring the force remains prepared to meet future security challenges while continuing its role in protecting the Kurdistan Region.
